MAN@NG IS DEITY pays tribute to the lives of the 'manong' generation—the first wave of cheap imported Pilipinx laborers who powered the ever expanding needs of the developing United States empire. Inspired by real-life accounts of Pilipinx Americans between the 1910-1940s, this performance and film draws from public and personal narratives of their 8,000-mile immigration journey to America.

My sincerest thanks to the original cast who generously contributed their heart & bodies in the making of this project—June, Jon, Johnny, Jose, Earl, Poko, Jazlynn, Aimee, Tino; Olivia Malabuyo Tablante of the Gerbode Foundation for your belief in the project; KULARTS’ Board President Lydia Querian, for her help at the January 2021 artists retreat in Oahu. She led us to Manong Romy and Manang Fe Turalva’s farm; Phillip Merlot, director of the San Joaquin County Museum; Irene Faye Duller, Sarah & Trey Norton for their family photos; my escrima brothers, Terry Joven & Joel Juanitas who organized the Stockton’s escrimadores for the Lodi shoot; Patricia Ong who facilitated and managed our 2019 Boulder Creek shoot. We shot the underwater scenes at Derrel Myers and Naomi White magnificent property in the Santa Cruz mountains. Sadly, the property was totally consumed by the Boulder Creek fire in August 2020; to our Eastside Arts Alliance familya- Susanne Takehara, Jose Navarette, Ada Chan and Chris Durazo; to Bern Sy & Filipino American Development Foundation; and to Bayanihan Equity Center.

Taus punong pasasalamaat!
